Maths

YEAR 6

Following the revised National Numeracy Strategy pupils continue to develop their use of mental and written mathematical skills in the following areas:

Using and applying maths

Applying their knowledge to solve problems and explore different ways in which mathematics can help to do this.  This will include a major project during the year.

Number and algebra

Reinforcing and developing arithmetic skills to enable them to investigate and solve mathematical problems.

Shape, space and measures

Working on various aspects of shape including recognition, finding areas and symmetries.  Pupils will have specific units of work on angles and co-ordinates.

Handling data

Solving problems by extracting and interpreting information from tables, graphs and charts.  Using probability to predict outcomes.

YEAR 7

Following the New Key Stage 3 Curriculum pupils continue to develop their use of mental and written mathematical skills in the following areas:

Key Processes and Applications

Carrying out tasks to solve problems.  Exploring and investigating problems by identifying the mathematical aspects of a situation, describing them using symbols, words and diagrams, and using procedures and reasoning to analyse the information.  Pupils draw simple conclusions of their own and explain their reasoning.  Relating mathematics to the real problems.

Number and algebra

Continuing to develop number skills in a variety of situations.  Working on the recognition and use of symbols to show relationships including specific work on number relationships and patterns. Developing graphical work including linear functions.

Shape, space and measures

Developing work on various aspects of the properties of shapes including area,

volume and angles.

Handling data

Collecting, representing and analysing data to find the answer to a question or problem.  Calculating the range and averages to compare simple distributions.  Developing key ideas in probability.

YEAR 8

Following the National Numeracy Strategy pupils continue to develop their use of mental and written mathematical skills in the following areas:

Mathematical processes and concepts and applying maths:  Pupils learn to identify the mathematical features of a problem and try out different representations, selecting the one which is most helpful.  They visualise and manipulate dynamic images; they learn to generalise and find ways to test the  logic of an argument; looking for exceptions.  They learn to establish the truth of a statement and evaluate different approaches and strategies.  Pupils learn to communicate their ideas efficiently.  They become increasingly independent and tackle problems of increasing complexity and technical demand.

Number and algebra:  continuing to develop number skills in a variety of situations.  Working on the recognition and use of symbols to show relationships including specific work on number relationships and patterns, and forming and solving equations.

Shape, space and measures:  continuing to develop work on the properties of shape and using geometric reasoning.  Using mathematical tools to construct shapes and angles.

Data handling:  developing skills in interpreting and processing data.  Understanding the appropriate use of ICT when handling data, selecting the information needed to answer a question.

YEAR 9

Following the National Numeracy Strategy pupils continue to develop their use of mental and written mathematical skills in the following areas:

Using and applying maths:  continuing to develop skills in problem solving in all areas of maths and justify results.  Developing functional skills.

Number and algebra:  continuing to develop number skills in a variety of situations, using reasoning to justify methods.  Developing the use of algebra to create and solve problems, including developing spreadsheets.

Shape, space and measures:  continuing to develop work on the properties of shape.  Using mathematical tools to construct shapes and angles.  Using ICT to explore shape problems.

Data handling:  use data handling techniques to gather and assess information, including ICT.
