Homework

Homework

All students at Castle Donington College will be expected to complete homework.  Homework is a valuable part of secondary education.  It allows students to practise skills learned in the classroom, to develop their ability to research, and helps them to form the habits of individual study necessary to achieve success in the later stages of their education and in the rest of their life.

The amount of homework students receive varies according to age and ability.  In Year 7 student should receive up to an hour a night.  This will increase each year through to Year 11. It is important for students to get into good habits and organise themselves so they are able to manage their time well and meet homework deadlines.

Homework activities, for all subjects, can be found on Show my Homework . Make sure you check the site daily. If you have difficulty logging on see Mr Barratt as soon as possible.

For students to be successful with their homework, they should follow these tips;

  • Make sure they understand the homework when it is set. Ask the teacher if they are unsure.
  • Try to do homework on the day it is set and while it is fresh in their mind. Don’t leave it until the night before it should be handed in
  • Get into a routine with homework times. Either tackle tasks as soon as they get home or at a similar time each night
  • Organise and plan their time in advance
  • Make sure you know the deadline for handing in your homework
  • Work in a quiet place that suits you best. Try to avoid distractions like your phone or the TV
  • If it is a difficult piece of writing (like a story, essay or report) draft it out in rough first
  • If they have a lot of homework, give themselves a couple of breaks so that you don’t get too tired. Reward themselves with a treat if you have worked really hard.
  • If they are stuck, ask your family to help (but not to do the homework).
  • Do more than the minimum; use extra detail, explanations or illustrations, show your research by adding a bibliography for example
  • Always check through your work to spot mistakes and to add any final touches.

We have high expectations of you. Try your hardest.
